Creativity is Not Brought From A Craft Store

Hey there, happy Saturday =) this post is titled the same as a video I uploaded last night as I think it's the best way of saying what I feel at the moment. I am getting asked a LOT of questions about products, brands and 'this' verses 'that' etc, especially via email and on youtube. I love my new supplies as much as anyone but do think the mentality of crafters sometimes is a little too heavily placed on the products, rather than the process...and when I'm asked, I just want to pull it back to creativity and say something like 'products are there to serve YOU, you are not the slave to products' lol here is the video with a tutorial as to how I make journaling cards =)
Thanks for visiting, have a great weekend much love Jennibellie xx

  3. Well said that woman!
I have shelves full of stuff that never get used and I wonder why I bought them, and some cheap acrylics that are fast running low because I use them all the time.

  6. OMG! I am so glad you made this post!I recently had rather a heated discussion about this topic- and how creativity is more personal thing that buying a bunch of premade stuff and collaging it; it IS totally about HOW you use WHAT you have...

  7. So true...I am always trying to convince my friends that it's not the material you have it's about HOW you use them...

  9. Jenni, I think you're at the forefront of a journaling revolution: the Anti-Consumerism Creativity Movement ;P.

I moved to a new house recently and your work inspired me to keep some of the construction leftovers (cardboard boxes, polyurethane sheets, wood glue, etc.). I stood back looking at it all as my mind kept thinking, "What could Jenni make with these?". And with this creative perspective, you saved me money because I came up with the idea of using leftover hardwood floor "padding sheets(?)" as kitchen drawer liners and stencils! :)

  10. Yay! So glad you point this out! More people need to hear this! I hear of people going into debt buying art supplies when they have more than enough at home, or could go for cheaper stuff instead. Well done you for not bringing the point home so well!

  14. Jenni...I've been following your blog and watching your videos over and over again...I just love everything you teach and the way you inspire and motivate. I am trying new things because of you...I've made a couple of journals...they are not as pretty as yours but a pretty good start...you made me less afraid to make mistakes. You are truly amazing...thank you for everything you do

  16. Once again, I love what you're doing. I'm like you. I use what I have. Period. At least 90% of my supplies are purchased at yard sales. I only ever buy new if I can't find it used. I love making art this way!

  17. YES! Well said :)
Actually for me, sometimes NOT having the exact products i want forces me to be creative & improvise & sometimes you get amazing results that way.. I have paintings that were done with highlighter ink + water or glitter nail polish & all kinds of random stuff..

I like your journaling cards :) I like to make a whole bunch when i have time & energy & then horde them for future use lol

  18. Great video - you've said EXACTLY what I've been thinking as I look at all the kits and stuff which you can buy to 'create' your art-work. I know scrap-booking and journaling shouldn't be an exclusive 'club' for those who can do a bit of the arty stuff, but people will never develop their creative 'muscle' if they don't have a go; buying these kits just does the whole job for you - how is that creative?
More power to your elbow, Jenni!

  19. Such great ideas here! I think that the more handmade elements a person can include in their journals, the more satisfying the end result can be. I love the postage stamp girls you created on your last page, and your finished journaling book is adorable! Thanks as always for your inspiration!!

  20. I just left a comment on your Youtube channel, Jenni - you are truly an inspiration! Thanks for helping us break out of the box and helping us not be so lazy using other people's stuff all the time. How fun is this, making your own AND saving money into the bargain.

Have you any ideas how to use old cassette tape boxes? I'm in the process of digitising all my old tapes and hate to think of the boxes all going in landfill...

I've been away from Blogland for a bit (family and health problems) but so glad to revisit your blog and feel my mojo flowing back! Thanks - you're such a tonic, and such a breath of fresh air!!!

  22. This is so inspirational to me, a newbie, just learning that I have an artistic side and if I can recycle, re-use and ultimately be more crafty by making some of the 'stuff' I need instead of buying it, then all the better. I know I have a whole HEAp of your posts and videos to catch up on, but there's no rush is there. Thank you for sharing :0)

  23. My New Mantra!! wants are many, needs are few...I thought I NEEDED all the stuff I bought, turns out I just WANTED them, hell of a difference! Now for a word that sums it all up....

PS I actually did NEED the stuff I got from your shop, I really REALLY did! xx

  24. This is so true. When I first started out art journaling I didn't know what to do at all and had never done much crafting so I really had no idea where to start. But I got caught up in accumulating supplies rather than actually using them! Now that I'm using my supplies I realize that some of the things I got early on should have been used sooner because things dry out, get old, etc. Learned -- use what you have! use it up, learn along the way and when you run out then you can try something new.

  25. On the other hand, all the pretty stuff in the stores are such gadgets :D I have a weakness for pretty papers. But...since my paperbox is considerd full, I have agreed to myself not to buy new paper before I have used all the old ones.
Love the journaling cards you made. Can you please tell what paper is best to use, because paper does matter a lot when printing or colouring. What paper do you use when printing the final journaling cards?

I love your videos and your artwork is amazing. Thanks for sharing and inspirering.

    xx Monica
